scribbles-and-wanderlust:

It takes a lot to surpass my love for BBC’s “North & South.” The social and political issues, the cinematography, the script, the costumes, the music (and obviously the tearful, anguished declaration of love, DUH).

And then I saw “Belle.” It has blown everything out of the water.

Yet more on Belle!

anonsally:

(Previous Belle pontifications—they contain SPOILERS though: one, two, three)

As I mentioned in one of those earlier posts, the movie explores questions of social status and privilege and intersectionality—and it does so at every scale. There are all the determinants of one’s position in the social hierarchy:

  1. noble/aristocratic blood
  2. race
  3. illegitimacy
  4. gender
  5. profession/job
  6. wealth
  7. father’s position
  8. marital status
  9. enslavement
  10. manners, to some extent

On the criticisms this film has received on being too like a Jane Austen romance (which frankly could never be a negative for me - they are extremely complex) another point that I think needs to be stressed is that this film is one woman’s coming of age story. For women in the 18th Century the choice of who to marry was one of the most important in their lives. The time of Belle’s coming out onto the marriage market is also the time where she leaves the seclusion of her family house and is exposed to the opinions of the outside world. Interweaving the drama of Belle’s growing knowledge of the Zong case and slavery with her exposure to and romance with a man not only makes sense it allows for the central judgement of the film to be paralleled. Belle (before her father) chooses love, respect, and equality over tradition, wealth and prejudice in her choice of husband.
